In Balkan-Slavic folklore, the Todorats (also known as Todorci) are terrifying nocturnal spirits that ride through villages and forests during the end of winter, specifically during "Theodore's Week." Emerging from the underworld, these entity-like figures represent a horrific fusion of horse and rider. They are often described as being seamlessly grown directly out of the backs of their phantom steeds, draped in heavy, tattered black cloaks that hide absolute emptiness beneath their hoods.

Led by Great Theodore, the pack charges ruthlessly through the darkness, their horses' hooves striking sparks and trampling anyone unfortunate enough to be caught outside. They carry heavy iron chains that drag along the frozen ground, creating a deafening, terrifying din. This myth served as a powerful seasonal warning to respect the curfew of early spring nights, symbolizing the chaotic, lingering malevolence of winter before the coming warmth.
