The Veneration of St. Agnes coincides with the annual storms bearing her name, the Tears of St. Agnes. St. Agnes, a martyred virgin saint, shed so many tears at her death that she flooded away the wicked. Unlike most religious ceremonies, women take the lead during the Veneration of St. Agnes. Women bring the light into the church, and stand near the altar while the men stay in the back in the shadows.
