She got social security, and she had an apartment at one time, after she paid for her apartment, she had $40 a month left.
We should do better for our elders.

That is the stupidest saying, and I read that the inventor of it meant it as satire— they thought the idea of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is patently ridiculous! Your bootstraps are down, not up! No one can do anything by themselves in the modern world, a business or a person needs roads, schools, first responders, medical care, workers, etc., etc. The rich think they are self-made, even when they inherited most of it, and so many others contributed to their success.
