The Lambton Worm

One day a young John Lambton was fishing in the River Wear. He caught an odd, eel‑like creature, which he threw into a well. He became a Knight, fighting in the Crusades. When he returned years later to his hometown, he discovered that a monstrous serpent was preying on the town - the very creature he had carelessly thrown into a well was now terrorizing the local populace. The brave Knight had spearheads attached to his armor. The beast had been able to regenerate itself after past attempts to slay it, so John Lambton dragged the creature attempting to constrict him into the River, where the current washed it away and prevented the pieces from reassembling..
