I no longer see Shirley as quite so prissy.  I'll get back to developing her appearance.  Her first appearance in the story is when Marcia takes her for a girls-night-out.  It is an early public appearance.  Marcia's sister Maxie (one of the co-protagonists) describes her first impressions of Shirley as:

"Shirley had obviously paid attention to sound advice.  Her hair, clothing and makeup were very much in line with the other women there.  She was wearing a classic little black evening dress with tights and pumps.  Her bust was well proportioned, if a touch high.  She kept her voice soft whenever she spoke.  Walking, sitting and even her hand movements looked so natural that nobody would notice her."
