Lying on the ground in a patch of burnt grass Armed and camouflaged, you listen to the wind

The choppers lifted off and headed north, their noise fading away over the hills. Broke was left with the sound of a gentle breeze blowing across the LZ. He wondered if this place would be a good spot for a picnic with his girl Linda. She loved surprises. He smiled wryly as he imagined her flying in by chopper and him holding a picnic basket instead of his rifle. He sighed, knowing that it was just a fantasy. He glanced over his shoulder and saw the LT briefing the section commanders. They would be moving soon. He checked his ammo and waited for the order.

As the chopper blades sliced through the humid air, Broke scanned the LZ with his rifle, ready to shoot any enemy that dared to show up. He could barely hear or smell anything over the roar of the engines and the stench of fuel, so he focused his eyes on the 4.5x scope attached to his weapon. The grass was still smoldering from the brief but intense firefight that had secured this patch of land. The wounded had been evacuated and the reinforcements had arrived. Broke felt a surge of relief that the opposition had been weak and poorly trained. He had seen enough blood and death for one day.
