The cat came back; we thought he was a goner, but the cat came back; it just couldn’t stay away.
Inspired by the blues-folk gallows comedy song written by Harry S. Miller in 1893, the popularity of "The Cat Came Back" endures to this day, as it has proven to stand the test of time.
The song tells the story of some “Old Mr Johnson” who wants to get rid of his “old yeller cat” but as the song’s title suggests, the cat keeps coming back.
Despite the dark subject matter, the lyrics are quite humorous, as the old man goes to absurd lengths to get rid of the cat, yet it still comes back.
