Wandering Through a Nightmare 

After at least a minute or two, she finally replied, “The same kind of dream you’ve been having…”. We both sat quietly for a while, and then she hung up after a quick, sorrowful, “Goodbye, love.”. I was stiff. I could hardly breathe. I scarcely moved. I was right. These dreams mean something, but even so, what {do} they mean? It was another hour until I got up and came back out to the Living Room. “What took ye’ so long?”, Dad asked. “It was…uh..”, I had no clue how to explain it. The best I could come up with was a mere, “It was Maisie, checkin’ in, y’know.”. Naturally, Mother wasn’t convinced. Dad seemed to understand my secrecy, but Mother retorted, “Ye’ were in there fer’ an {hour}! What actually happened?”. I sighed roughly, knowing there was no way in hell I was getting out of this. Eventually, I just muttered, “Nothin’…Just do-don’t worry about it.”. Mother kept biting back, “How can I not when yer’ being untruthful?”.

I finally snapped, slamming a fist onto a nearby table, yelling out, “I said I’m fine!”. She stumbled back, startled by my outburst. I slowly looked down at my hand, which now lightly trickled blood. I looked to the clock. 3. “I have to go…”, I stuttered, slowly turning around towards the front door. “Thank you..”, I mumbled back to them as I left. I walked down to the edge of the hill, and before going down, glanced back at the house. I saw Mother standing there, a solemn, yet understanding expression on her face. She waved, mouthing the words, “Bye, Lamb.”, and walked back inside. I shed a single tear, feeling terrible, still continuing down the hill. I reached the end of the hill, got in my car, and headed off. Hours passed. The sun set. The night awoke. I pulled over to the side of the road, still in the countryside. I pulled the seat back, laid down, and closed my eyes, dozing off near-instantly. 

I only saw black. Only for a while. I then opened my eyes, finding myself in a harrowing, yet familiar place. I forced myself to stand, looking straight ahead to see Maisie, kneeling down. I rushed over to her, seeing her face-to-face. Her eyes were blank. I tried shaking her in attempt to wake her up, but all was in vain. She was still. Unmoving. I held her close, sobbing a bit. Her body was cold. Frigid, even. I pulled away from her, looking her dead in the eyes again. This time, they were different. They were blackened. I heard an ear-shattering humming noise, looking around in a panic, seeing a void-ish black cloud darting right towards us. I sat still, and as it surrounded me, Maisie, and everything around us, I shot up in my seat. My breathing was heavy, uncontrolled. I looked around again, but this time I was in my car again. The same dream…again.

As I walked over to my old room, I realized Mother was right. My phone was still ringing. I pick it up to see who could’ve been calling. For a second, just a second, my heart stopped. It was Maisie. She never calls me around this hour. I pick up, putting the phone to my ear, and mutter a, “Hello?”, semi-panicked. “Erick,”, Maisie began, “When’ll you come home?”. I sighed in relief. Thank God. “I’ll be back in another day or two.”, I replied, still calming down a bit. She was silent for a bit, unnerving my slightly. “Could you…”, Maisie finally mumbled, “…come home tonight, maybe?”. I sat there in thought for a moment, “Lass, you-uh…you alright?”, I asked, starting to get worried. “Yes, I’m fine. I just…”, Maisie paused, “…I’m worried about you.”. “Eh?”, I didn’t quite understand, “Why…w-what’s wrong? What happened?”. “I had…a dream.”, She answered, “About you.”. I, again, paused, then asking, “What kind of dream?”. She was silent again.
