“No chains,” she said softly. “Only a table long enough for every hungry child.”

Aisha knelt before them, eyes burning with fury.

“I took dates to feed my child,” she said. “If this is freedom, let me return to chains.”

Anna’s chest tightened.

crisis erupted when a caravan leader accused one of the freed slaves, a Hausa woman named Aisha, of stealing dates from communal stores.

Under the palm grove, the community gathered in tense silence. Anna sat upon woven mats beside Amastan, presiding like desert royalty.
