Ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798 – 1861) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for his dynamic and dramatic prints. Kuniyoshi’s art style is characterised by its bold lines, vivid colours, and imaginative compositions, often depicting scenes of samurai, folklore, and mythology. He primarily used woodblock printing techniques, utilising materials such as ink and coloured pigments on paper. His work is part of the ukiyo-e movement, with notable series like The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and Heroes of the Suikoden. Kuniyoshi’s innovative approach and storytelling through prints have made him a significant figure in Japanese art history, influencing many artists who followed.
