Herodotus' Trochilus Bird and the Nile Crocodile
Created a year ago · 10 comments· 0 likes
Qwen Image
Herodotus' account of "Trochilus" birds cleaning crocodiles' teeth is a classic illustration of a symbiotic mutualistic relationship between species. It is possible, however, that the great Herodotus was mistaken. Crocodiles frequently bask with their mouths open, and Egyptian Plover birds do approach them without attracting the attention of the crocodiles, but no dental cleaning has ever been recorded to confirm Herodotus' account.
