A key event in what I'm calling "the Kyle novel" is an uprising by "clients" at a secretive camp in my fictitious West Tennessee town who have been subjected to anti-gay "conversion therapy" but have also been victims of brutality at the hands of some camp workers and a number of dangerous offenders of the same age range who have been housed at the facility as a money-making racket in cahoots with a few crooked judges.

At the time I started writing these characters in 1992, I was not under the blissful illusion that what I was writing was pure fiction, a horror show, but I didn't realize how many news headlines would reinforce the idea over the next three decades that these were terrible and frighteningly commonplace realities for many teenagers in America.
