Abdul Mati Klarwein

Abdul Mati Klarwein (Mati Klarwein, né Matthias; 1932 – 2002) was a German-born Jewish painter who lived in multiple countries worldwide. He was known for his eclectic, vibrant, and intricate works that blend Surrealism, Orientalism, and Psychedelic Art. He added "Abdul" to his name to express his sentiments about the hostility between Jews and Muslims in the Middle East; he felt that to understand each other better, every Jew should adopt a Muslim name, and vice versa. His art, influenced by his diverse background and extensive travels, reflects a rich tapestry of global spirituality and consciousness. It's characterised by eclectic imagery, intricate detail, vibrant colours, and the seamless blending of various cultural symbols and themes, incorporating religious and ethnic themes from several global cultures. He used a combination of oil paints and mixed media to create his elaborate and often dream-like compositions. His work is featured in iconic 1960s-70s album covers.
