Helena stepped into the Holy House Chapel. It was small, yet it never felt confined. Dark timber panels lined the walls, and the beams arched overhead like the ribs of an upturned ship, catching the soft glow of candlelight. Beeswax and old incense lingered in the air, and the hush of the room seemed to slow even her breathing.
A narrow stained-glass window washed the floor in muted blues and greens. The altar stood plain and dignified beneath a small, time-worn image, the sanctuary lamp burning steadily beside it. Along the walls, modest statues kept quiet watch over rows of flickering votive candles.
The worn wood of the chairs and kneelers spoke of generations who had come here carrying burdens they could not name. Nothing in the chapel urged haste. Everything invited stillness โ a place where silence felt full, and the weight of the world could rest for a while.

Helena moved with practiced reverence, lighting the altar candles one by one, the flame catching and steadying as though it had been waiting for her.
When she finished, she did not kneel at once.
She sat instead in one of the plain wooden chairs set along the wall, her hands folded loosely in her lap. The silence gathered around her, not empty but full โ the kind that pressed gently against the ears and made room for breath. Time passed without shape. At moments her eyes closed; at others they rested on the tabernacle, unfocused.
Sometimes tears came, quietly, without warning. She did not wipe them away at first. She had learned long ago that tears, like prayers, did not always need words.
Mostly, she sat.
In the stillness, Chestertonโs lines returned to her, as they often did when the world seemed to grow heavier rather than clearer.
