Frans Hals

Frans Hals (Frans Hals the Elder; 1582/83 – 1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter celebrated for his dynamic and expressive portraiture. Renowned for his loose, energetic brushwork and ability to capture the individuality of his subjects, Hals’s work exemplifies the vitality and realism of 17th-century portrait art. He primarily used oil paints to create lively depictions of both individual and group sitters, contributing significantly to the development of Dutch Golden Age painting. Alongside Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer, Hals is considered one of the foremost painters of this period.

The Frans Hals Museum (formerly Stedelijk Museum van Haarlem), located in Haarlem, the Netherlands, was founded in 1862 and owes its name to the painter. It houses an extensive collection of works from the city’s rich artistic heritage.
