Inanna descends into the Underworld ruled by Ereshkigal, her sister. She passes through seven gates, surrendering her divine regalia one item at a time. She arrives stripped of power and identity. She is judged, killed, and hung on a hook. The world becomes barren in her absence. Enki's compassionate magical beings obtain her release. She is revived with the Water of Life. A substitute is required. Dumuzi, her husband,is chosen. His cyclical return becomes an explanation for the seasons.
