I was standing amid sharp stones with bands of yellow, blue, purple, and red; a few green stalks grew between them. Harsh yellow light came from the sky, so bright I couldn't look at it, and it took me a moment to make out anything else. When I glanced back, away from the light, my shadow was clearer and more distinct than I'd ever seen it, which I noticed even before I realized that I was standing on a platform, deliberately smoothed. The platform had even more colors than the rocks around it, and they rose from the ground twisting and weaving and swirling around me. (Steven Brust: Tsalmoth, p. 220)
