While many Koryaks and Chukchi previously lived in yaranga or jajanga (domed tents), not many families continue to do so as primary dwellings. However, some still utilize yarangas for trips to the tundra or for specific cultural purposes. The Koryak and Chukchi, indigenous peoples of the Kamchatka Peninsula, have traditionally lived in yarangas, which are similar to tipis but less vertical.
Koryaks:
Traditionally lived in domed tents. While not many families live in yarrangas as primary dwellings, some still use them for travel or special occasions.
Chukchi:
Many Chukchi were educated in Soviet schools and are now literate and fluent in Russian. While some still work in reindeer herding or sea mammal hunting, only a portion continues to live a nomadic lifestyle in yaranga tents.
