A Digital Illustration Of The San Sabá Mission Along The San Saba River in Menard County Texas Burning Down On March 16, 1758
The mission was established in April 1757 by Spanish friars as a military outpost and church to evangelize the Lipan Apache tribe. However, the mission was abandoned shortly after construction due to frequent attacks from the Comanche, who were enemies of the Lipan Apache. In 1758, the mission was destroyed by an estimated 2,000 warriors from the Comanche, Tonkawa, Yojuane, Bidai, and Hasinai tribes. The attack marked the beginning of warfare between the Comanches and European invaders in Texas. The mission's ruins were rediscovered in 1993 and confirmed by archaeologists in 1994.
