A successful black Nova Scotia businesswoman, Viola Desmond defiantly refused to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946 and was subsequently jailed, convicted and fined, which she fought and lost. She recieved a free pardon after her death and is considered Canada's "First Lady of Civil Rights." Desmond is depicted on Canada's $10. bill.
