The Village -- that was the name by which the Rock was commonly known -- had adapted: every obstacle had been circumvented by bridges and walkways, at first rickety, then increasingly safe.
On the terraces of the higher parts, attempts were made to cultivate something, but the large de-salting plants operated intermittently, powered by now rusty, decades-old generators.
As a result, virtually every resource was obtained from the sea: fish, seaweed, water, salt, energy.
Paradoxically, people waited for the rains almost in a state of desperation, because they finally brought fresh water -- and they were days of great celebration.
