In the creation story of Norse Mythology, Ask and Embla were the first of mankind. The Sons of Borr carved them from two fallen trees which they found upon a beach, carving the man from the ash tree and the woman from the elm. Oðin granted them life and spirit, Vili granted them thought and feeling, and Ve granted them language and sight. Upon awakening, they were granted to freedom to dwell in Miðgarð, and from them are all the race of mankind descended.
