Sri Narayana Guru, a prominent philosopher and social reformer from Kerala, performed a significant ritual on the night of Shivaratri in 1888 that became a symbol of the fight against caste discrimination. He took out a stone from the Neyyar River, located near the village of Aruvippuram, and installed it as a Shivalinga.
