This is a rather heartwrenching scene from one of my novels in the series Snøtigerens klør, here the elf Hawk has to witness the death of Shi'lehn, the young nomad girl who by her bravery and self sacrifice saves the world from an ancient evil. She fell in love with him and he accepted her as his second mate to provide her with some joy before the end, but he cares more than he would like to admit. Since she has been a true follower of the goddess she is given the choice to continue to serve and she does, as a huge black eagle.
