The adults never believed it... the stories the children told... they chalked it up to little ones' vivid imaginations and chidlike playful spirits. Little did they know the spirits involved were anything but playful, or childlike. At first the tales were adorable, harmless... until they weren't. The children gradually became frightened and sick, emaciated, unable to eat or sleep. It was all that damnable tree, father said, as he marched into the forest with an axe... he never came back. Then the people in town stopped hearing from mother and the children. They found the home abandoned as if in the dead of night. And the only sign of any foul play was father's axe found in the woods... stained with blood. Lying next to a gnarled, ancient and twisted tree.
