This depicts Karl Ryker as a younger man. The quiet desperation that later fuels his alcoholism already shows.
While Karl will eventually get his act together (mostly) the collateral damage done to his two children will yield one autistic superheroine and one sociopathic supervillain.
Karl features prominently in several additional superheroic origin stories.
In many ways, Karl's oft times tragic story arc is a precautionary tale.
