So in D&D there is a place called Nod which is the plane where all dreams come from. It is ruled over by the goddess of dreams. Anything you think up there becomes a reality. Now a summoner can tap into this place and draw a living dream called an Eidolon into the realm of men. That dream takes on whatever form the Summoner thinks of. As they go up in levels the summoner can then evolve the Eidolon giving them new abilities. So I could play a halfling summoner and summon a giant teddy bear that looks all cute and cuddly but could rip an enemies face right off.
