The corset held her tight, the mask pressed her breath close. And then, almost laughing, she let out a cry — a long, muffled shout of joy into the thick fabric.

“Mmmmmhhhhh—hhhhhmmmm!” ...

Louisa lowered her arms, laughter bubbling behind the mask, though no one could hear it clearly. Her eyes sparkled behind the veil. She sat again on the bench, drawing one steady breath after another, pride filling her chest.

At last she felt it fully: she was not only hidden. She was sealed. And the world, far from mocking, had begun to praise her for it. ...
