Temple of Appeasement

In fear and trembling they lived, and they anticipated with rueful expectation the Day of Appeasement. They watched the stars and listened to the soothsayers and consulted the entrails to divine that unholy day, and when it came, as it always did, they brought their baleful offerings to the dark gods and placed them in the eye sockets of the Skull of Vrektas, the Vengeful. For they knew that if they did not appease that insatiable and unforgiving demon, then famine and plague and grief would befall them. Their lives were harsh and short, and worth but little, but what little they were worth the people clung to tenaciously, for it was all they had. They hated giving these unholy sacrifices to such gruesome gods, and they hated themselves for giving them, but their alternative was unthinkable. And so had it ever been, for as long as their elders remembered, and as long as their chronicles recorded.
