There are rules older than the temple itself. A princess does not lower her hand to a servant's face like this, not in daylight, not where the carved kings can see, not where anyone might learn to read what a gesture means.
She does it anyway. Just for a moment, just at the hour when the light turns everything the same shade of gold and no one looks twice at two women sitting close.
The girl in her hands isn't thinking about the stone gods watching from the wall behind them. She's thinking about tomorrow, and the day after, and how many more golden hours they'll get before someone finally does look twice.
Some kingdoms are built on rules. This is what happens in the cracks between them.
