Niccolò "Gnocca" Ghislanzoni, also known as "Il Donnajuolo," experienced a period of great creativity that critics baptized "Gnocca's Green Period" -- in which the talented Renaissance painter devoted himself to depicting Florentine noblewomen in the woods of the neighboring town of Scandicci (which later in the 20th century became infamous for being the scene of the crimes of the Monster of Florence).
Portrayed here is Madonna Venanzia Guicciardi, a noble Florentine lady, with whom Donnajuolo is rumored to have had a clandestine affair.
