Where the Sea Food Blinks, and the Calamari Was Looking Back
The sign outside promised “Eats From the Abyss,” which should have been enough warning for any reasonable person.
But the place had five stars.
Inside, the waitress smiled too wide.
The chef’s tentacles stirred six boiling pots at once.
And somewhere in the kitchen, something wet whispered my order before I said it aloud.
“First time dining with us?” she asked.
I nodded.
The table beside me burst into applause as a man survived the appetizer sampler.
Against every survival instinct I possessed, I ordered the special:
The Heart Attack Stack.
Still beating.
The fish-headed waiter set the plate down carefully.
The fries twitched.
Something beneath the bun blinked.
Then the calamari looked directly at me.
Not near me.
Not past me.
At me.
That’s when I noticed the warning sign over the counter:
“May contain screams.”
I should have left.
Instead…
I asked for extra sauce.
