Woodland Sylph

As they have come down to us in traditional lore Wood Sylphs represent a personification that symbolizes beauty and the connection between the natural environment and human emotion.

The Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus developed an elaborate theory of ruling "elemental spirits": gnomes controlled the earth, salamanders fire, undines water, and sylphs the airs.

These fantastic ideas were balanced with an impressive array of solid medical discoveries. In fact, many of his scientific contributions are still highly respected, however his concepts of sylphs has been degraded as mere fairy-tale fantasy. There they remain only as romantic figures of literature, art, and ballet, where diaphanous Woodland Sylphs are often depicted enchanting unwary males.
