"I have been underfed, underpaid, undernourished, and everything but undertaken. I been bit by dogs, cats, mice, rats, poll parrots, fleas, chiggers, bedbugs, grand-daddies, mosquitoes, and a gold-toothed woman".
"Well, what is it that's always you've always feared?"
"That I will die before my time..."
(I no longer have the book this story was in. The short story was entitled "Final Fear". Jesse B. Semple's description of his various insults, both personal and physical is from the book, as well his answer, but I cannot find the accurate quote of his interlocutor. This resembles what was written. The stories about Jessie were delightful and occasionally hilarious.)
