This sub was designed as part of an era of a move toward smaller surface navies with smaller ships and a much greater emphasis on submersibles. These changes came about due to the advent of hypersonic missiles. The sub uses a fully electric propulsion system, which grants it improved stealth. It has sound cannons to intercept torpedoes, torpedo bays of its own, and several missile tubes under the light-up hexagons found on its dorsal surface. Finally, it has old-style sails which can be used above water as a means of conserving battery life. The sails have flexible solar panels on them to provide power as well.
Additionally, the Lake Superior is for the most part made out of aluminum alloys rather than steel to reduce weight. It can still withstand the extreme water pressures of the deep sea due to its hydrodynamically sound design. Its low weight is the reason its sails can provide meaningful thrust.
