Owls are creatures of the night and are strongly associated with the supernatural in the Native American culture. Many tribes see owls as messengers.
In the Cherokee tribe owls were animal spirits of the upper world. A common species in Cherokee territory, mainly the Eastern Screech Owls, served as spiritual consultants.
Since some of the Cherokee people associate the owl with medicine, they view the owls link to the spirit world helpful to those who are ill. Owls were also known to be the shaman's birds, ever attendant to these otherworld travelers.
