Inspired by a quote in a Louise Penny book.

There's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.

A single daisy emerges from dark earth, reaching for a golden light shaft. Rendered in warm sepia with high contrast, evoking vintage photography.

EPISODE 1 — The First Thread

Maeve Callahan and Ingrid Halvorsen are assigned the disappearance of Lena Broussard, 28, last seen after leaving a roadside bar near Highway 61 in Louisiana. At first, the case looks ordinary: one missing woman, one late-night road, one witness who is unsure of the time.

Then the first inconsistencies appear.

A motel key marked 214 is found among Lena’s belongings. A receipt places her near the Bayou Motel. A payphone number appears twice in separate notes. One witness mentions a dark pickup truck, while another insists Lena left alone. Maeve notices that the times do not line up. Ingrid notices that everyone seems to remember the truck differently.

By the end of the first day, the detectives realize they are no longer looking at a simple disappearance.

They have found the first thread.

EPISODE 2 — Room 214

Maeve and Ingrid follow the first trail to the Bayou Motel, where Lena Broussard’s key opens Room 214.

The room appears recently abandoned. Nothing inside immediately explains why Lena was there, but the motel ledger raises new questions. The same room number appears repeatedly beside the name R. Vale, along with a telephone number already found among Lena’s notes.

Then another detail stands out.

A late-night entry is marked 02:13.

In the parking lot, Ingrid learns that a dark pickup matching the witness description had been seen outside the motel more than once. Maeve notices that several dates in the guest ledger have been altered by hand.

Someone had been using Room 214 regularly.

And Lena may have known exactly who.
