His hands clenched at his sides, the left one twitching awkwardly, the twisted fingers aching as they always did before the full moon. The old wound pulsed with the steady throb of pain, a reminder of the life he had once begged God to heal. God had ignored him.

A bitter laugh escaped his lips as he watched a young mother hurriedly usher her children into their home, her gaze flickering nervously toward the darkening horizon. Another child pulled at her skirts, whining for something, and Peter’s eyes narrowed in disgust as the woman instinctively pressed a hand to the cross at her throat.

“What good will that do?” he muttered under his breath, loud enough that the passing villagers heard. One of them, an elderly man with a hunched back, stopped in his tracks, his cloudy eyes widening at Peter’s words.

“God protects us,” the old man rasped, clutching his cane as though it too were a holy relic. His voice shook, but the words held the conviction of the faithful.

Peter felt the familiar surge of anger rising within him, dark and consuming. “Protects us?” He stepped forward, his voice growing louder, harsher. “Did He protect that boy the other night? Did He protect my hand? No—your God is no protector. He watches while we suffer.”

The old man’s face blanched, his wrinkled hand gripping the cross around his neck so tightly his knuckles turned white. “You... you blaspheme...”

Peter sneered, turning his back on the trembling figure. “Blasphemy? I speak the truth. Your God is nothing but an empty promise.”

The old man stumbled away, muttering a prayer under his breath, while the few remaining villagers hurried past, casting fearful glances in Peter’s direction.

He stood alone now in the square, his chest heaving with barely contained fury. The dull ache in his hand pulsed in rhythm with the anger thrumming through his veins, the old injury stiff and unforgiving. He had prayed for healing, begged on his knees until they bled, but what had he received? Nothing. Just pain, day after day. And now, when the darkness closed in, the villagers turned to the same God who had abandoned him.

A sharp voice broke through his thoughts.

“Peter Stump.”

The late afternoon sun cast long, pale shadows over the narrow streets of Bedburg. Clouds thickened in the sky, dull and grey, as if the weight of the coming night pressed down on the village. The crisp air carried a sharp chill, biting at the skin, but it wasn’t just the cold that had the townsfolk moving quickly along their paths—it was the unease that always came with the full moon.

Peter Stump stood near the edge of the square, his arms crossed, his face twisted in a silent snarl as he watched a small group of villagers passing by. They spoke in hushed voices, their hands clutching at the crosses that hung around their necks, casting furtive glances toward the darkening sky. Prayers slipped through their lips, murmured under their breath, but Peter heard every word. The sound grated on his nerves, like a jagged blade twisting in his gut.
