# It's interesting that genetic studies have been done on animals now studied to learn more about them. Taxonomists/systematic biologists can't agree just where each one fits but the African wildcat (*Felis lybica*) and the European wildcat (*Felis silvestris*) and the three species of wildcats found in China plus the domestic cat all are subspecies of *Felis silvestris* (the European one called *F. silvestris silvestris*). So domestic cat is *F. silvestris cattus*, the Chinese wildcat is *F. silvestris bieti*, etc. 

# All species of *F. silvestris* can freely interbreed and produce viable offspring. Even some felines outside of the genus can interbreed due to people wanting "new" breeds of cats. 🤬 Example serval (*Leptailurus serval*) with domestic cat, and accidently by being housed together at a zoo, the serval with a caracal when it was totally unexpected!
