They nailed it. Apparently it come down to the quality of the training data. 1.5 was trained on a data set that was much better than the training data of SDXL - the 1.5 dataset  became proprietary (meaning it cost money to use) so it was not used. 
1.5 is also 'more creative' when asked to 'dream' a bit - meaning Prompt weight over 50%. 
SDXL etc have clear limits when using Start Images - above a certain level, the influence of the Start Image drops-off very quickly as the 'canned' baseline of style and content falls by around 35% weight. 
1.5 maintains the fundamental characteristics of the Start Image even above 50% weights (Noise and Prompt Weights) which opens up a TON of creative room. 1.5 is a diamond - SDXL is a synthetic chip of inferior material.
