I let go of her hand and stand up. I put on my hat and coat, and grab my gun from the drawer. "I'll be in touch," I tell her. "Don't worry, I'll find out who did this to Grumpy."

She nods, and gives me a weak smile. "Thank you, detective. You're very kind."

I walk out of her apartment, and head to my car. The rain is pouring down, and the streets are dark and empty. I light a cigarette, and take a drag. I think about Grumpy, and the ring he gave her. A symbol of their love, he said. A love that was doomed from the start.

Grumpy was a small-time crook, a hustler who ran errands for the big boss. He was always looking for a quick buck, a way to get ahead. He didn't care who he crossed, or who he hurt. He was greedy, and reckless. And he paid the price.

Someone put a bullet in his head, and left him in a dumpster. A message, a warning, a hit. But who? And why? Was it the boss, who found out about his affair with the dame? Was it a rival, who wanted to take his place? Was it a creditor, who wanted to collect his debt? Or was it someone else, someone I didn't know?

I had a lot of questions, and not many answers. But I had a hunch, a feeling, a clue. The ring. It was a rare piece, a valuable one. It had a mark, a signature, a name. It belonged to someone, someone who wanted it back. Someone who would kill for it.

I had to find that someone, and fast. Before they found me, or her. Before they finished what they started. Before they silenced us both.


I drove to the pawn shop, where Grumpy got the ring. I hoped to find the owner, or at least a lead. I parked outside, and got out of the car. I walked to the door, and knocked. No answer. I knocked again, louder. Still no answer. I tried the handle, and found it unlocked. I opened the door, and stepped inside.

The shop was dark, and quiet. Too quiet. I reached for the light switch, and flipped it on. Nothing happened. The power was out. I took out my flashlight, and turned it on. I scanned the room, and saw the shelves, the cases, the items. And the blood.

There was blood everywhere, on the floor, on the walls, on the counter. And there was a body, behind the counter, slumped over a chair. It was the pawnbroker, the one who sold the ring to Grumpy. He was dead, shot in the chest. His eyes were wide open, and his mouth was agape. He looked surprised, and scared. He looked like he saw something, something he wished he didn't.
