How to Find Polaris (The North Star):
Polaris, also known as the North Star, is easy to locate from the Northern Hemisphere by using the Big Dipper constellation as a guide. First, find the Big Dipper — it looks like a large ladle or saucepan made of seven bright stars. Focus on the two stars that form the outer edge of the “pan”: Merak (bottom) and Dubhe (top). These are called the “pointer stars.”
Now, imagine a straight line extending from Merak through Dubhe and continue that line about five times the distance between those two stars. The bright star you reach is Polaris, sitting at the end of the handle of the Little Dipper and marking true north.
