Sanyu (Chang Yu; 1895 – 1966) was a Chinese artist. He was one of the earliest Chinese artists to study in Paris, France, and despite his struggles, he chose to stay in Paris, which he considered the art centre of the world. Sanyu’s art style was unique, and he was known for his ability to blend Eastern and Western techniques. His work was characterised by the style of a Modern Art movement called the Storm Society (決瀾社, Juelan She, "a great wave"), which was initiated by a Chinese Post-Impressionism artist group influenced by Western Art to break away from the conservative Chinese art style implemented by the Qing Dynasty. Despite his Chinese roots, Sanyu made a significant effort to assimilate into French society, even applying for naturalisation in France. His artistry was nourished by his life in France, and he longed for his work to be recognised and appreciated by a European audience.
A charming picture of a cat perched on a pillow, encircled by flowers and twinkling heart-shaped lights. This artwork evokes the style of early 20th-century modern art.
