Housing market distortion and inequality:

Inflows of global capital, often from anonymous or offshore buyers, inflate London housing prices and displace local residents. Implementing a graduated surcharge on such purchases and directing funds to affordable housing would reduce speculation and support community housing.

Lobbying power blocking reforms:

Concentrated financial interests influence policymakers to preserve weak regulations, delaying necessary reforms. Requiring publicly accessible, time-stamped registers of all meetings between regulators, ministers, and financial firms, along with third-party impact analyses, would increase transparency and diminish undue influence.

Capital flight from developing economies:

Profits and resources from poorer countries are extracted via opaque London-linked channels, undermining local development. Supporting automatic information exchange and source-country withholding mechanisms for payments routed through London would help retain revenue and strengthen governance in origin countries.

Talent and economic concentration in finance:

London’s high rewards in finance draw talent away from vital sectors such as manufacturing, research, and public services. Offering targeted tax credits and student-loan relief for STEM and public-sector careers would diversify the economy, build productive capacity, and reduce over-concentration in finance.
