A barely perceptible glow emanated from the dot on Bastian's palm, growing rapidly and causing the faces of the two very different children to light up out of the velvety darkness as they leaned over the miracle. Bastian slowly withdrew his hand, leaving the glowing dot suspended between them like a little star.

The sprout grew very quickly, they could see. It unfurled leaves and stems, sprouting buds that burst into beautiful, multicoloured, glowing, phosphorescent flowers. Small fruits were already forming which, when ripe, would explode like miniature rockets, spraying a shower of colourful sparks from new seeds.


Plants grew from the new seeds, but they had different shapes, resembling fern fronds or small palm trees, cactus balls, horsetails or gnarled trees. Each one glowed and shone in a different colour. Soon the velvety darkness around Bastian and Moonchild, above and below them, and on all sides, was filled with sprouting and spreading light plants. A glowing ball of colour, a new luminous world, floated in the middle of nowhere, growing and growing, and in its innermost depths Bastian and Moonchild sat hand in hand, watching the wonderful spectacle with astonished eyes. The plants seemed inexhaustible, producing new shapes and colours. Bigger and bigger flower buds opened, richer and richer umbels sprouted. And all this growth took place in complete silence.
