Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is a Chilean territory in Polynesia. It's located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 miles from the other islands of Eastern Polynesia and 1,400 miles west of South America. Easter Island is known for its anthropomorphic "moai" statues, which thousands of tourists come to see each year. The island was the first Pacific island to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Easter Island is home to about 5,000 people. You can access the island by flight or through extended world cruises. The only flight connecting Easter Island to the mainland is into Chile's capital city, Santiago
