Mice

Death, draped in shadows, sighed. "Little one, your journey here is done, but fear not, if you really want to stay, I have a task for you." With his skeletal hand he reached out and gently grabbed the mouse, just taking its soul with him  leaving fur and bones behind.

So the mouse became  a spirit, adorned with ethereal light and the essence of the stars. Death, gentle and kind, spoke, "You are a guardian now, tasked with watching over the tiny souls arriving here so they can gather in a haven for the small and the gentle , before you guide them too me."
The mouse embraced its new purpose, guiding departed ants, butterflies, and beetles even mice. Into the afterlife's sanctuary where death would come and pick them up.
