ℹ️ Did you know that cats have a special organ in the roof of their mouth called the Jacobson's organ or vomeronasal organ (VNO)? This organ is responsible for detecting pheromones, which are chemical signals that animals use to communicate with each other.
When a cat comes across a scent that contains pheromones, it will often open its mouth slightly and make a facial expression known as the Flehmen response. This allows the scent molecules to reach the Jacobson's organ and be analyzed more closely.
The Jacobson's organ is not unique to cats, but it is particularly well-developed in them. Other animals that have a well-developed VNO include snakes, dogs, and some rodents.
