The Caretaker slowly wanders the mansion, resetting light switches and turning off any nearby lights to envelop rooms in darkness.
He moves unpredictably, randomly appearing in rooms without a sound, and only becomes visible in the player’s peripheral vision at first, creating an unsettling “blink-and-you-miss-it” effect.
If the player looks directly at him for too long, he vanishes instantly, reappearing moments later much closer to the player, adding a feeling of relentless pursuit.
To avoid him, players must be cautious not to linger in dark rooms, as he grows stronger in low light, and prolonged exposure to his gaze will eventually immobilize the player, leading to an “encounter” screen that results in a game-over if not escaped in time.
