I am not surprised that she pleases your senses.  This is right up the lane of your aesthetic preferences.  So, it's as much your appreciative eye for detail (and antique tones) as anything brought through in the image.

Always.  That's the power of black & white, particularly in photojournalism.  Absent the distractions of color the subject, theme and message of an image has a stronger chance of capturing and holding our attention.  Of course, if those fundamentals are weak, B&W is going to also reveal that.

A valuable tool for imagery in any medium is to bring the final version into a simple image viewing tool that contains a desaturation tool.  Draw down all the color and then sit with the image a while.  Any critical weakness are likely to stand out starkly once the color has been removed.

More simply put: if an image can stand up on it merits in monochrome it is very likely a solid work. 

I can appreciate that. Since I create books, I convert a lot of images to grayscale. They often look better as B&W!
